The Pac Sun season

Pac Sun runs September to April, and the first matches come up faster than you expect.
The week before the season starts is the perfect time to get ahead of the other clubs.
A lot of teams roll back in from vacation and start slow — if we walk on sharp, we take advantage of those early matches.
Winning the first matches can be key to a great season.
Get match ready and dialed in for a strong start to the season.
Get used to the 11 AM heat we may be playing under in September and October.
02

What are we offering?

1.
Three days of intensive tennis.
2.
Consistency, shot selection, court positioning, and strategies.
3.
Full game points with serves: the serve, the return, and the decisions that follow.
4.
The pros will come together and brainstorm on how to make each player better and more match-ready for the season.
03

Why should the ladies sign up?

Team clinics run an hour and a half — rarely enough time to break certain things down properly. The camp gives us three hours.
Coaches rarely get to see the ladies play out points with serves. At camp, we watch full game points.
That is where consistency, positioning, shot selection and strategy show themselves.
Each player leaves with feedback for her own game instead of general notes for the team.

The work

ALL DAY
01
Consistency

Nobody gives consistency the credit it deserves. Players give poaches, winners up the line, the pretty trick shot too much credit. YES, they are all part of it. But in order to hit a winner, players will have to have hit at least ONE quality shot before going for a put away.

02
Court Positioning

Learn how to eliminate most of your opponents' options so that you and your partner can cover what's more likely to happen. In other words, force your opponents to hit the lower-percentage shots by positioning yourself in the right spot.

03
Shot Selection

There is almost always a right shot to hit, and it depends on the moment. Learning how to read the scenario and recognize whether to defend or attack during a point is what shot selection is all about. When you pick the right ball at the right time, the game gets a lot simpler.

04
Strategies

When you combine consistency, shot selection, and court positioning, strategies become way more straightforward than how they are perceived in tennis. Without consistency, court positioning and shot selection, the strategies do not exist. Learn how to finally build real strategies together.

The format

A DAY AT CAMP
Opener
ABOUT 10 MIN

A casual intro before we start, whether we run one court or three. We walk through what the morning looks like and set up the first drill. Nothing formal.

Drills
45 MIN

Four drills, four pros. We explain each drill on court, right before it starts: what it is for, what you get from it, what to do.

Bring it in
15 TO 20 MIN

We bring everyone in and we talk about: consistency, positioning, shot selection, strategy. Short and punchy, then back on court.

Goal-oriented points
30 TO 40 MIN

We will be playing points based on scenarios that come up most often in match situations.

Round robin
ABOUT 30 MIN

A supervised round robin. Try a new partner or play with your season partner, while a coach watches, takes notes, and gives you feedback.

Wrap-up

We bring it in, recap what you worked on, send you off with real encouragement and a few numbers that matter, and Mark closes it out.

Live Ball

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

There's no better place to try out new things than live ball, because everything is short-lived in live ball. Players don't have to get self-conscious or feel bad about letting their partners down, because they're playing with different partners all the time.

Poaching may be one of the hardest things to learn in doubles. A lot of people don't poach because they're worried about getting passed down the line, or they hesitate and miss the ball. None of that should happen in live ball.

Live ball is the perfect opportunity for players to be more courageous and adventurous with their shot selection. There's no serving, so the points are short and nothing is cumulative. It becomes totally fine to try things you normally wouldn't try in your matches or even in your friendlies. And because there's no serving, all the dead time of picking up balls disappears: the points are quick, the rotations are quick, and players find a rhythm โ€” which makes it that much easier to poach, rip a ball from time to time, and be more aggressive.
